Homesteads
Text in English, French & German

£6 (€9)
Rural people throughout southern Africa
build their houses today in much the same fashion as
their forefathers did for generations before them. Thatched
Zulu beehive huts may still be seen scattered around
the KwaZulu-Natal countryside, while the Tsonga people
decorate their homesteads with a variety of clays, producing
beautiful patterns in rich autumnal shades. The Tswana
and South Sotho people also decorate their homes, sometimes
with brightly coloured designs, sometimes with simple
lines engraved in the wet mud surface or freshly prepared
walls. The Ndebele people paint their homesteads with
the highly distinctive geometric designs for which they
have become famous world-wide. Some people also carry
the bright patterns through to the interiors of their
homes.

Arts & Crafts
Text in English, French & German

South
Africa is proud of an exceptionally vibrant artistic
tradition. Some of these practices date back to pre-colonial
times, for instance the production of household goods,
such as clay pots, grass buckets and gourd vessels.
In the course of the twentieth century new practices
emerged, including the production of large clay sculptures
and murals using commercially produced paints. In
general these crafts, both old and new, are practiced
by women living in rural areas, who need to generate
income to raise their families. Today clay pots, grass
buckets and other items are produced both for the
tourist market and for domestic use, and in this way
local artistic traditions have been revitalized. |

Dress & Adornment
Text in English, French & German

The Way people dress and adorn themselves is often a means
of giving expression to their social, political or religious
values. Specific kinds of dress or the use of certain
types or ornamentation are prescribed by ritual or by
convention, including deeply entrenched gender relations.
Thus clothing and other adornment usually underline the
hearer's status and identity. In some African communities,
beadwork may be used to draw attention to a woman's status
as the mother of a man who has just undergone circumcision,
while in others it may play a role in divination practices.
A range of southern African peoples, whose clothing combines
traditional and Western elements, is represented in this
book. |

Ceremonies
Text in English, French & German
Colour throughout 96pp
£6 (€9)
People around the world mark transitions through the observation
of rituals. In South Africa, many ceremonies are aimed at
securing the spiritual well-being of the individual and the
community. Until the late 18th century all indigenous groups
performed initiation rites to prepare young people for their
roles in adult society. The Zulu abandoned these in favour
of age-grade regiments in the early 19th century. A number
of celebrations associated with the coming of age of young
women survive to this day, while the Reed Ceremony, associated
with puberty rites among the Swazi, was adopted by the Zulu
in the mid-1980s. Among other groups there was a revival of
interest in initiation in the course of the 1990s, and young
people from urban areas often participate in ceremonies organized
by rural chiefs and ritual specialists. |
