| Masks
have been a form of disguise in almost all cultures of the
world. The use of masks in religious, social, and recreational
festivals is a centuries-old tradition in Mexico, where masquerade
has played an important part in the lives of the people since
pre-Hispanic times. The styles of masks in the various ethnic
regions of Mexico are as diverse as the locations themselves
- from the Santiaguero mask worn during the Moor and Christian
dance dramas in Puebla to the Hummingbird mask used for carnival
in Hidalgo. This postcard book features a cross section of
Mexico's rich culture though 30 colorful, artistic, and distinct
masks from the collections of the Museum of International
Folk Art, Museum of New Mexico. Most of the images in this
book were originally published in Masks of Mexico, published
by the Museum of New Mexico Press. 17.5cm x 12cm |
