Indian
artists have a long tradition of excellence in miniature painting.
The thirty Indian miniatures presented here include paintings
from the fifteenth through to the twentieth centuries. Ranging
in size from about seven by five inches to around fourteen
by eleven inches, they were produced in many regions of India,
as well as in areas that are now part of Pakistan. In general,
Indian miniatures are characterized by lively composition,
vivid colors, and fine brushwork, but they exhibit a greater
range than is sometimes realised. This selection, from the
collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, provides
a superb introduction to their exquisite delights. Thirty
full-colour postcards.
