The
body defence of scales is called a lorica plumata because
the pine scales resemble feathers. He is wearing leather
upper arm and kilt defences (pteryges), for protection,
over a tunic. Although eagle bearers were usually bare headed
it might be expected for them to wear a helmet in combat.
His weapons are a sword (gladius) and a dagger.

is wearing a mail hauberk and has strips of leather as protection
of his thighs and upper arms (pteryges). His masked helmet
is very similar to the bronze cavalry sports helmets. Animal
skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular.
He is carrying the century standard (signum) and has a small
